True Stories from MQ Production, part III.

So the story behind this is that when i was doing that staff photo drawing that i posted awhile ago, Drew jokingly told me to make Nicole sadder, as i had already drawn her apparently not looking very pleased (i didn't see it, but everybody else did). Anyways, half an hour of dicking around later, this is what emerged. This one is very true to life. Keep that in mind, possible future MQ copyeditors.

True Stories from MQ Production, part II.

Hey, check it out guys, i almost went an entire week without some sort of filler. Woo? Oh well. Sadly i frittered away all my time this evening going to see Kung-fu Panda. It was okay. Not bad. Not great. Tell you what, i wouldn't tell you not to see it, but i wouldn't tell you to go out of your way to see it either.

It's been awhile, but order of people present at this one: Brendan, either Tim or Mohhamed - i draw them pretty similarly, and though that looks more like how i draw Mohhamed, i'm not sure - Drew, and myself. Oh, and then the dead hooker at the bottom.

True Stories from MQ Production, part I.

These are all relatively true. Except for the one about killing hookers.

Filler

I spent like three hours on what turned out to be an only mildly funny gag, and then hit a snag. So fuckit, i'm giving up for tonight. This is the staff photo for the first MQ of the 2007-2008 cycle. Anybody who came in and worked on production that week before school started got drawn into the picture. Some depictions are less accurate than others. For example: Mohammed does not, to my knowledge, wear fez's around on a regular basis.

Going clockwise, starting in the top left: Mohammed, Andrew, Brenden, Dana, Me (sitting), Nicole T., Tim, Drew, Ryan, Jordan, Naomi, Kim, Nicole C. (sitting).

More MQ Filler

Sorry kids, but i'm tired and still "adjusting" to moving back home, so i haven't really been producing many comics.

The Tinman

Another "made while dicking around during MQ production" ones. A promotional poster for a movie highlighting my unhealthy obsession with The Wizard of Oz. And Jean-Claude Van Dam.

Stolen from the MQ, part I.

Semi filler, today. If you read the MQ, this is one of my features that i've done (permission was vaguely given by Drew). Distressingly, i'm leaving for LA in a few minutes and didn't have time to write a comic for today. So i'm assuming the majority of you have already seen this. But if not... well, it's pretty good, right?

For Drew and Nicole

So i'm sorry about this one guys, but when i was sitting here trying to think up a comic, all that i could think about was that ridiculous movie. I somehow doubt that this comic will translate to outside the watched-Doomsday demographic, but really. That movie was ridiculous.

Hopefully this will get it out of my system and by monday we can all be laughing at my unemployed hijinks again.

Origin of Blubber Buddies

I realize this whole switching of blog addresses looks like an April Fools joke, but it's not. I just like Blubber Buddies as the title of my comic. Which, actually, in a roundabout sort of way originates from this comic.

I drew a simplified version of this idea for the MQ one issue, and it was going to be the comic, and then, bored and listening to the content room telling stories about whales eating penguins, i doodled out a cute little one-panel scribble of an orca trying to sneak up on a penguin on an ice-flow, and the penguin giving it a withering look and saying "I can see you". And Griffin, bless his soul, loved it so much that he went around the office and one by one, convinced everyone that it should be the comic for that issue. And so it was. And the Utako (because i'd left, having finished my work), didn't have a title for my comic, and so, spur of the moment, just decided to call it "Blubber Buddies". Which has been the (now predominantly nonsensical) name for my comic series ever since.

I'm actually not very satisfied with this. I need a graphic tablet, man. This whole scan-and-clean is getting to be too much work, and i'm getting lazy as a result. For proper comedic timing, there should be a couple panels after reading the sign where he looks sneakily left and right before he throws it away, to make sure it's understood that he's aware that he's not supposed to be doing it, but that he doesn't expect the terrible repercussions that follow his actions. But man, this already took me three hours to do, and adding those two panels would have taken me another one. Or, shit, maybe i just need to take a class on how to clean these up shortcut-style. I don't know.

Trying my hand at the journal-style comic

No real punchline here. Just my day at the Wild Animal Park.

Finally getting photoshop has made this both a much, much easier and much, much harder process. Before i got it, using MS Paint, this comic would have been impossible to make, and had i tried i would have been completely stymied by any one of the dozens of problems i encountered while making this, all of which were easily solved in photoshop. At the same time, to make this comic i had to draw it, scan it, layer it, clean up the scanned lines, move dialog around so it would all fit, color it, format it, and resize it, and this process took me about two hours, which is about an hour and forty minutes longer than it took me to make the last two comics.

Moon

So this is kind of an old one, pulled from the folder of random crap i draw when otherwise unoccupied during MQ production. As it's one of the more aged ones, i'm not exactly sure, but i think the earth winking and the moon's pained expression are supposed to imply this to be some sort of anthropomorphic space bukkake.

Special Ides of March Extra Comic!

I was going to use this one later, but then i noticed that today was actually the Ides of March, and so it was extra topical.
